MUDRAS AND MANTRAS

Mudras are hand positions that are practiced during prayer and meditation, in a sitting pose. The theory behind Mudra is that each finger represents one of the five elements: the little finger represents earth, the ring finger represents water, the middle finger represents fire, the index finger represents air, and the thumb represents the space element. We are made out of these five elements and that’s why we have five fingers. When we hold the position where tip of a finger touches the tip of the thumb, that element is balanced in the body; when a finger is flexed and touches the base of the thumb, that element decreases; and when the finger is extended, that element increases in the body. The meditative practice involves feeling the heartbeat where the finger tip touches the tip of the thumb.
