Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease characterized by joint inflammation and leading to joint destruction and deformity. Women and smokers are more likely to develop RA and the prevalence is about 1%. Cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown (likely autoimmune) and there is no known cure. Treatment with steroids/ NSAIDS/COX2 inhibitors/ Immunomodulators/and TNF inhibitors is directed towards suppressing inflammation, reducing symptoms, and slowing disease progression.
Ayurveda classifies rheumatological disorders (including RA) under “vata” disorders and treatment includes vata reducing lifestyle changes, specific yoga and pranayama exercises, and herbal supplements to restore constitutional balance and reduce ama (tissue toxins). Herbs like Ricinus communis and Terminalia billerica regulate the colon (site of vata). Rubia cordifolia and Tinospora cordifolia help cleanse the blood (rakta dhatu). Cyperus rotundus and Zingiber officinale remove the ama, and Emblica officinalis with Glycerhiza glabra and Curcuma longa reduce inflammation.
